Each plant covers spacing² × 0.866 in a triangle pattern, so plants = area ÷ (spacing in feet² × 0.866). That is about 15.5% more plants than a square grid.
Plants per square foot = 144 ÷ spacing in inches² for a square grid. At 12 inches that is 1 plant per square foot; at 6 inches it is 4.
Flats = plants ÷ plants per flat, rounded up. Flat sizes differ by nursery, so type the count from yours.
Price, soil, mulch, plant losses, and odd-shaped beds beyond the area you enter. No extra plants are added for you.
